Ayurvedic medicine is considered to be the oldest medical system in the world, embraced by India thousands of years ago. Ayurvedic is stemmed from the word Ayurveda which is defined as a natural system of medicine. The word ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit word ayur, meaning life, and veda, meaning science or knowledge, translating to the science or knowledge of life.
This holistic medicinal modality combines products, like plants, animals, metal and minerals, with diet, exercise, and lifestyle to uphold the belief that health and wellness depend on the proper balance between mind, body and soul. Those who practice ayurveda believe the idea behind disease and illness is due to an imbalance or stressor in a person’s consciousness.
Ayurveda teaches that three energies, called doshas, form characteristics of what is called a prakruti, a combination of the physical and psychological unique attributes of a person. There are three doshas: vata, pitta, and kapha.
The first energy is vata meaning “the subtle energy movement.” This energy stems from space and air elements and is considered to be the most influential of all three. Vata controls the body’s breathing, blood flow, heart function, and bodily waste. It seems that this energy, unlike the other two, has great balance between thought and emotion. It fuels creativity, activity, and a clearer understanding.
The pitta energy means “warmth” and “transformation.” This energy is based from the fire and water elements and rules the digestive and metabolic processes in the body. It controls the small intestine, eye, hair and skin. Eating sour or spicy foods and spending too much time in the sun can disrupt this energy.
The last energy, kapha, means “that which binds things” and relates to mucous, lubrication, and carrying vital nutrients throughout the body. This energy can offer endurance, physical and psychological strength and stability, and is governed by the water and earth elements. Kapha encourages positive emotions and controls our weight and immune system.
